Hospital Participation

As of May 2001, North Carolina had 125 state-licensed hospitals, located in 84 of 100 counties. Eleven hospitals were selected to participate in the North Carolina Collaborative Stroke Registry prototype study. While the hospitals varied in size, location, type, each facility had one important factor in common: a local individual able to champion the Registry.

Hospital collected data on stroke cases from May 2002 until June 2004. Members of the North Carolina Collaborative Stroke Registry team regularly met with hospital staff to assist in the implementation of the data collection and data quality processes. Once data collection was completed, the resulting analyses provided each hospital with site-specific, quantitative quality of care indicators. With these data, hospitals could now effectively measure the impact of quality improvements on individual aspects of stroke care.

In October 2004, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, in conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , extended an invitation to all 125 hospitals in the State of North Carolina to participate in the North Carolina Stroke Collaborative: A Coverdell Acute Stroke Registry. In additional to the eleven prototype participants, 15 hospitals submitted applications of intent to participate. Data collection began in December 2004.

If your hospital is interested in participating, please contact Carol Murphy.
